2010 Wishes

As we wrap up the year and start a new decade, a few of my resolutions for the nation:

1.) That environmental concerns continue to be at the forefront of the American debate and are not destroyed by our unwillingness to change as a nation.

2.) We figure out a way to keep a public option in healthcare - without it, what is the point of healthcare reform if it will still be controlled by insurance companies.

3.) That we find a way to get out of Iraq and finish the job in Afghanistan as quickly as possible, where is our intelligence anymore? Why can’t we get these guys.

4.) That our nation heals the current divisive and gotcha culture.

5.) To move forward as a nation like we did in the race to the moon in the 60s, aren’t we supposed to have flying cars by now?

Please contact the Mayor re: Police Domestic Violence

Police Ofcr, Hlavac, (who was promoted 2 yrs. ago, despite his domestic violence
record), is again facing charges for dislocating his ex-girlfriend's jaw.

We need your help now.

The women of Pgh. must hear from the Mayor and the Public Safety Director that
Domestic Violence is a crime that the Mayor and Pittsburgh Police take very
seriously – SO THAT NO WOMAN WILL HESITATE TO CALL THE POLICE IF SHE NEEDS HELP.

Please take a minute today to email / call Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's office
(email: luke.ravenstahl@city.pittsburgh.pa.us, phone: 412-255-2626).

Suggested Message:

Dear Mayor Ravenstahl,
As a Pittsburgher, I ask that you take immediate action to hold a televised
press conference, with Chief Huss, to make a public statement that Domestic
Violence is a crime that the Mayor and Pittsburgh Police take very seriously.
This statement should reassure everyone – especially women - that victims' of
domestic violence can and should always feel comfortable reaching out to the
city of Pittsburgh Police for help, and that every Domestic Violence call will
be responded to promptly, and with the respect and seriousness it deserves.

Sincerely, YOUR NAME HERE

We're on Twitter

The Society is now on Twitter. Follow us @pghwomen Who knows where we'll lead you? :-)

If we are especially ambitious, we'll try to participate in #wednesdaywomen #ww and promote our favorite female tweeps!

Parking Space Reservations?

We found this space reserved on W. North Avenue ... yes, two walkers with a garland of crime scene tape. To be fair, it is a handicapped spot so you have to give them props for driving home the point that there are some things that just need to be respected ...

Police charged with domestic assault ... again

Does anyone know the consequences for Sgt Hlavac under the new policies?

Pittsburgh police Sgt. Eugene Hlavac was charged yesterday with one count of aggravated assault after his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his son, said he hit her.

Lauren Noel Maughan initially contacted Penn Hills police, who referred her to Pittsburgh police. She provided a written statement, according to a criminal complaint filed in Municipal Court.

The sergeant, who works in the Hill District, was arraigned yesterday and released on his own recognizance but was ordered to have no contact with Ms. Maughan. He could not be reached last night. His status with the Police Bureau was not clear.

Not a good year for the Mayor's promotees. Hlavac, obviously, hasn't quite learned a lesson. And then there's Commander Trosky of Zone 2 who faces allegations that he commandeered a Zone 1 event and engaged in conduct unbecoming a leader by verbally abusing a subordinate assigned to the Mayor's security detail. That's one ugly, unholy mess of a pissing contest in what could be yet another attempt to squelch the role of women in the police upper echelons (Zone One is commanded by Rashelle Brackney, a highly respected commander who is standing up to Trosky's roll over on her responsibilities).

So let's hope the new domestic violence policies have some teeth and can potentially break this cycle before Sgt Hlavac breaks more than the jaw of the mother of his child. Or any woman.

Pittsburgh Mayor Hires Men. Yawn

Wow. The Mayor has recently appointed 4 directors, 1 assistant director and a city solicitor.

One is a woman, Judy Hill Finegan as director of the Department of Personnel and Civil Service Commission. Judy's predecessor was also a woman so there's no net gain for female leadership within this Administration.

Now I can't get on the Mayor's press release list so I have to cite the Post-Gazette. I wonder how many female driven media sources are on the press list?

The moves continue "the reorganization of City government as [the mayor] charts the course for his first four-year term," a news release said.
Remember, this Administration worked with the Women & Girls Foundation on a gender pay equity study for City employees. Equity in pay is certainly linked to equal opportunities in terms of high level decision making positions. Right?

One recommendation from the study was increased representation to address actual and perceived inequities.

Finding: Females face additional barriers hindering their pursuit of advancement opportunities in City government. The lack of females in higher level jobs indicates that there have been self imposed, organization, or structural barriers to women seeking to move into the higher levels of the organization in the past.
Focus group and survey data support this perception. A subset of focus group participants (approximately 20 percent) felt that gender discrimination plays a key role in the ability of come City workers to advance within the ranks of government. Other participants felt that favoritism and political motivations played a bigger role. Specifically, these employees cited that women do not become as involved in politics in the City and as a result do not progress to the more power jobs. Regardless of the reason, there is a lack of female representation in higher level positions.
The Mayor has defaulted once again into the the tried and true method of maintaining the status quo by failing to identify the women (we know they exist) qualified to lead these departments or at least one of these departments.

Business will continue as usual.

"Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity." ~ Robert A. Heinlein ~

MONDAY MORNING SURVEY: WHICH PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE PIECE WILL HAVE THE RADICAL MIDDLE'S AUTHOR'S KNICKERS IN A KNOT TODAY?

Chad Hermann, left, holding one of his inventions, "the manzier," which he intended to be a "great gender equalizer" in assisting middle-age, upper class, white males in breaking the barriers that have so long held them back.

Choices, choices, choices. Chad Hermann must be giddy with excitement.

A) Will columnist Sally Kalson tighten the knot she's already created?

B) Will CMU English professor Kathy M. Newman's comments in an article that focuses on the Easy-Bake Oven stir his panty pot?

C) Will the idea of a gender agenda in the article about two squabbling police commanders at Mayor Ravenstahl's election party bunch his boxers?

D) All three, resulting in an "atomic wedgie."

Vote now ladies and gentlemen!

Astrological Happenings Horoscope, December 2009

Uranus, the 'Awakener' finally stations on December 1st, and prepares to turn forward and continue on his courageous journey! During the past few months of his REtrograde, he encouraged us to temporarily internalize our aspirations and dreams - so that we could follow our own dreams and find our own uniqueness again. This process was to help 're-awaken' our individual spirit and to reconnect with our original purpose - rather than blending in and following the crowd. As Uranus held his reins tightly on us for the past few months, we may have experienced more solitude or loneliness (depending on your perspective). The main goal was to help us to re-think and re-shape our mission and individual calling. We needed to learn about our own resistance to change, and to REdiscover our own individuality. Uranus was also busy doing the backstroke through mystical Pisces, and we may have received our own messages of insight regarding compassion and the power of forgiveness, so that we could do our own changing and let go of past. These vibrations of course helped to promote self-healing as well as humanity for others, and for the world. This 'waiting game' is an opportunity to detach ourselves from our emotions, with an option to REevaluate our intentions, like 'be careful of what we wish for'. So whatever has been 'on hold' in our life since July, there was a reason, and it was our chance to re-invent ourselves. To be the change that we want to see the in the world.

Today we will feel the reins unleashed us again, allowing us to carry on with our lives again, but with a new force of motivation! We have a new vision in mind of what we can change in our life now, but we must follow our own beam of light to make it happen. So in the near future, expect to see some big changes in ourselves, our relationship with others, and in the world! I should add that Uranus is the rebel who shocks the world for a bigger and better cause... so be prepared for a few big surprises in the coming weeks ahead!

In the Tarot, Uranus is represented in the message of The Fool. In this image, a new chapter is ready to unfold in the life of the Fool. Walking along without a care in the world, the Fool may be considered 'quite foolish' or 'brilliant' as he strays from the safety of his space on the hillside - to walk off the cliff and wander into the 'unknown'. It is surprising, shocking, and definitely life-changing. No one expected that he would be so spontaneous and just 'do it'. And sure, the Fool could completely louse up the whole thing without thinking of the consequences - or he could be a genius who wasn't afraid to take a risk, and then surprisingly lands on his own two feet! Just expect the unexpected! If you are interested the Tarot, I write a monthly Tarotscope, pulling one card per each sign. Check out my Tarotscope Happenings here!

Our desires and needs shift from the darker world of Scorpio, and come out into the open, as Venus enters expansive Sagittarius December 1. There are no games with truthful Sag. Love is spread in big way, because it makes us feel good - and because we can! In Sagittarius, we aim to give big and generously, as we know how much we actually get back from it! Sagittarius is the traveler, so many of us will add traveling to our plans to spread the cheer. Sag also represents our belief system, religion, and philosophy and we may feel the need to reconnect with others (or ourselves) in a grand way. Venus (Relationships and Money) has great potential when she meets up with the abundant world of Sagittarius, so we could see our partnerships and finances take a BIG turn for the better. Unfortunately, Sag is also a risk-taker and can be known to be quite irresponsible and frivolous with the funds, so enjoy the blessings - but try not to take it for granted! Have fun, but invest wisely!

Communications and friendship come out strong for us during the Full Moon in Gemini on December 2. The Full Moon shines brightly and lights up the darker areas in our life - rejuvenating negativity into positive light, love, and truth. Allow this moon to see life and others as they are - rather than how you hoped it would be. Communications also become more reserved as Mercury enters serious Capricorn on December 5. Our thoughts become more focused about family, money, and tradition. We are leaving the 'tall tales' of Sagittarius behind, to concentrate on how we can structure our ideas and profit from them too. During this holiday time of sharing, we could begin to put a tighter hold on our wallets (Cappy can be pretty stingy), while communicating the real message behind love and the 'gift of giving'. On December 9, my website: Starcana.com is celebrating our eighth year on the internet! whoohooo!

A new emotional cycle begins with a New Moon in philosopher Sagittarius, December 16. We have the potential to take ourselves to a much higher place during the next few weeks if we work with the vibrations, while investing genuine thought AND action into our goal. Our passion and actions come to a screeching halt as Mars stations and turns retrograde in big-hearted Leo on December 20, which will continue 'til March. You may have noticed your world already starting to slow down, but.... read the complete horoscope here!

Happy Holidays!

Oh noes!

There's something else wrong with me as a woman -- my boobs are of the non-talking variety.

But, if they did speak, I'm betting that they'd sound a lot smarter than the boobs who wrote this ad:

What a day, what a day.

The Collected Notes of My Day

I pulled my car into the narrow driveway by the entrance to my apartment. Not only was it not on the street, but it would have required QUITE A BIT of effort to be able to tow it out. It was there when I woke up and I didn't even have to sleep in it! Yay for warm blankies and pillows. :-)

Every polling place I went to, except for one, had illegal activity going on inside of it. I went back to Election Protection headquarters and spent an hour just filling out paperwork.

I know that paperwork is not quite as exciting as pictures and videography but the rules are the rules. You should have seen some of the things going down. I was like, "I know I'm Agent Ska and all...but this is another level."

Man. Senior citizens sure can be mean, too! I think my self-esteem could take a month or two to recover. Or maybe it'll just take a quick minute.

Congrats to everyone who ran a campaign- win or lose- it's good to have a competitive democracy.

As Einstein once said:

"[Curiousity] is a delicate little plant which, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom."- From Schilpp, Albert Einstein: Autobiographical Notes, 17

(I bought a book of quotes by Einstein the other day at the Science Center. Yes, I am a dork. Thank you for letting me know.)

Night kiddos!

Astrological Happenings, November 2009 Horoscope

Happy November to everyone! The month starts out with Daylight Savings Time ending at 2am on November 1, so be sure to to turn your clocks back one hour! It's also the time that you need to check all of your carbon dioxide and smoke alarms in your residence, and replace old batteries with new. If you don't have these devices, be sure to put them on your list. As we are inside more during the colder months, we use a lot more electrical products, and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Intentions from last month's New Moon in balanced and fair Libra, comes into full light and full circle on November 2 as we experience a Full Moon in grounded Taurus. Energy is now secure and developed. Secrets are revealed, answers come from our subconscious and dreams. It's favorable time to put yourself 'out there' to be exposed and get noticed. It's also good timing for putting out your brainstorming ideas as well as promoting your business advertisements.

Reflective Neptune finally stations and turns direct on November 4. Our most inner sensitivities that make up who we are: faith, creativity, compassion, along with our confusions, sadness, and guilt - have been bottled up inside of us for five long months. During this soul-searching process, we have meditated and privately reviewed who we are, to figure out how to fit ourselves back into society without shame or uneasiness. Where we were drained and/or emotionally bruised, we redeveloped ourselves and are ready to approach the world once again. We've evolved and healed our creativity and originality , where blame or regret once existed. Our dreams and our inner life source has been nurtured, and we are able to be much more expressive and genuine to others, as well as to ourselves. We're ready to help and make the world a nicer place to live in!

Our desires become much more intense and private as Venus enters suspicious Scorpio November 7. There is much power-play and manipulative games as we want and crave control and power in our surroundings, and this energy will exist strongly in our relationships with others, our money, and in our work. We will find many being much more cautious and 'hush hush', obsessed with a need for privacy and seclusion from exposing too much of our inner-selves now. Venus in Scorpio strategizes on ways to separate the weak from the strong, and the loyal from the careless. A web is carefully weaved into a manipulative and sexy game, and as we make ourselves less visible in order to target the weakest link. There is much drive to get what we want, and there isn't much that will stop us.

Mercury delivers our communications, and as he exits secretive Scorpio, to enter trustworthy Sagittarius on November 15. Our thoughts and expressions open up in a BIG way, sharing our aspirations, our perspectives, and our advice. Our aim is to share honestly and teach - while putting others ahead of ourselves. If you happen to have any private information that you hope doesn't get leaked right now, it would be wise to put it into a drawer with lock and key - because this is the time that confidential information is revealed or blabbed! We may be thinking about advancing ourselves now, expanding our horizons in some way - whether through exotic travel in an adventurous expedition - or through study in college or books. we will have more of an urge to travel more, so even if it is just short trips, that may be enough to sooth our urge to 'get out' for awhile.

What sort of energy would you like to stimulate and have come your way in the next 28 day cycle? On November 16 we have a powerful New Moon in influential Scorpio. It's the perfect time to put intentions out there, to draw in natural vibrations. Preplanning goals should revolve around the Scorpion agenda, focusing on intimate relationships, release for regeneration, our money, and cleaning out old debt.

Our inner jester comes alive on November 21 as Sun enters generous Sagittarius. Our spirits become alive and invigorated, releasing our playful inner child to become rejuvenated again! Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius, and together we will get to see more abundance and kindness during the next four weeks, a stronger connection with our faith or religion, law, publications, travel, and yes... more good cheer! Sagittarius is the king of parties and a good time, so it's no wonder that we have this nice little time of the year when we all can get together with friends and family, spreading lots of love and gifts, with laughter, drinks, and good food. So in a small way, you get to try on a Sagittarian experience! If I sound partial, I am (I'm a Sagittarius LOL)!

We get to remind each other of what we are truly grateful for on November 26, as we give thanks and respect on this Thanksgiving day. Have yourself a good holiday, and a terrific month!

Smiles and Blessings!

You will be quite active for the next weeks making plans, rescheduling the dates, busy, busy, busy - while doubting that you can keep up with it all! It could feel as if these coming days are filled with challenges and obstacles, when really; the Universe is helping to simplify your to-do list. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Temperance: Order is finally forming for you in November, as you do your best to reorganize your practical needs, from your personal wishes. Life is getting so much simpler! As you experience the joy and balance that moderation brings into your life and surroundings, you develop a stronger inner self. You are understanding that by saying 'yes' all the time - doesn't necessarily mean you gain more - but instead, you lose little pieces of yourself. Congratulations on making wiser choices!

LEO (July 23-August 22) The Magician: November will be a spectacular month Leo, because you will really get to show everyone what you are REALLY made of! Power, strength, beauty, organization, and willpower... should I go on? Your skills, experience, and charm get to be well-used these coming weeks, especially if you are looking into ideas for more promotion. You're balanced now, everything is falling into place, and you are capable of attracting whatever you set your mind too. You're also being reminded to shift 'with' the flow of things now, so eliminate the stubbornness. The more you glide with the wind, the faster you go, and the better you look! Presentation is your lucky charm!

VIRGO (August 23-September 22) Five of Pentacles: You could end up feeling separated from yourself this month Virgo, as you become part a 'weeding' process. Changes are beginning to become more apparent and real, but that doesn't make things easier. It will be grounding for you to spend quality time with yourself, to think about your goals and where you want to be - and what you may have to separate from - to grow. Material and/or financial struggles may set you back temporarily, but only if you allow it. The Universe is requiring that you revise your lifestyle, so that you can figure out what is actually missing in your life - sot you can set new goals and have real direction! You'll figure it out!

LIBRA (September 23-October 22) Ten of Pentacles: November blessings are yours Libra.. you wanted it all and now it is all yours. You have worked hard to build the world that you have, and for the next weeks you will get to relax and enjoy the fruits of your hard labor. Prosperity and ancestral endowments may be on its way, or this could be an increase to promote growth in your household - which could add an addition to the family tree, or an advancement in your work or career. It's really just the icing on the cake, and this final touch will make you feel even more proud of the life that you have built for yourself. Well done Libra!

Remember, it's all in the way you hold your cards... so play it smart!

Please, someone run against Metcalfe next year

PA State Rep: Domestic violence= family values?
by Michael Morrill
Fri Sep 18, 2009 at 09:20:54 AM PDT

A simple resolution to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives was halted by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, a Republican representing Butler. Why? Because, he said, "It has a homosexual agenda."

No, I'm not making this up. Here is the rest of the quote from his remarks on the House floor, objecting to the resolution: "I protest, this is not non-controversial, and if you read the language it has a homosexual agenda."1

On the same day, also on the House floor, he made matters worse. The House was about to vote on increasing marriage license fees from $3 to $28, with the increased amount going to a fund for victims of domestic abuse. Metcalfe opposed the measure, calling the funding of domestic violence programs "a slap in the face to family values."2 The bill passed despite his outrageous claim.

PATRIOT DAY AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE, 2009
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Through the twisted steel of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the scarred walls of the Pentagon, and the smoky wreckage in a field in southwest Pennsylvania, the patriotism and resiliency of the American people shone brightly on September 11, 2001. We stood as one people, united in our common humanity and shared sorrow. We grieved for those who perished and remembered what brought us together as Americans.

Today, we honor the lives we lost 8 years ago. On a bright September day, innocent men, women, and children boarded planes and set off for work as they had so many times before. Unthinkable acts of terrorism brought tragedy, destruction, pain, and loss for people across our Nation and the world.

As we pay tribute to loved ones, friends, fellow citizens, and all who died, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideas and ideals that united Americans in the aftermath of the attacks. We must apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed, and defend against all threats to our national security. We must also recommit ourselves to our founding principles. September 11 reminds us that our fate as individuals is tied to that of our Nation. Our democracy is strengthened when we uphold the freedoms upon which our Nation was built: equality, justice, liberty, and democracy. These values exemplify the patriotism and sacrifice we commemorate today.

In that same spirit of patriotism, I call upon all Americans to join in service and honor the lives we lost, the heroes who responded in our hour of need, and the brave men and women in uniform who continue to protect our country at home and abroad.

In April, I was proud to sign the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Originated by the family members those who lost loved ones on 9/11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance is an opportunity to salute the heroes of 9/11, recapture the spirit of unity and compassion that inspired our Nation following the attacks, and rededicate ourselves to sustained service to our communities.

Throughout the summer, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to lend a helping hand in their communities through United We Serve. As this summer of service draws to an end, we renew the call to engage in meaningful service activities and stay engaged with those projects throughout the year. Working together, we can usher in a new era in which volunteering and more service is a way of life for all Americans. Deriving strength from tragedy, we can write the next great chapter in our Nation's history and ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the promise of America.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day, and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2009, as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001. I invite the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with other ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA

somewhere to belong...

In recent days I’ve been mulling over the idea of community and what that means to me. I’m still not sure yet what the answer is… but I have time on my hands and I am taking steps to find out…

I didn’t go to college, and therefore was never part of any collegiate community. I became a mom at a very young age, not many of my friends were having babies at that time, mostly busy with their collegiate communities. And since I was single, I didn’t much have time to join mommies groups, or have play dates with stay at home moms, I was too busy trying to make a buck and find a meal; there goes those communities. And although I have many GLBT friends and attended several Gay Pride parades while living in Seattle, I wouldn’t pretend to be part of the GLBT community. I did join the Seattle Flickr Meetup for a time, but I didn’t really feel like I fit in and so I didn’t stay long enough to call that community… There is my Facebook community consisting of classmates from Junior/Senior high school and ex coworkers that became friends. I am grateful to be back in touch with many of my old classmates, but in some ways it has reminded me that I was always on the fringe of that particular community. Then there is the group of people who are now friends but were once ex coworkers, and although some of them became my friends while we were all working at the same place… I would never say it developed into any sort of community.

So here I am wondering where is my “group of people having common interests” and how do I fit in?

Having moved to Pittsburgh recently, and spending a great amount of time learning about the people and places through blogs (even having met my friend Jenny through her blog)… I came across other women blogging who also live in Pittsburgh… sounds like a community I might fit into: I am a woman, I blog and I live in Pittsburgh. So I asked if I could join, someone sent me an invite, I accepted. Now I am at least a part of this community. I’m looking forward to contributing, and maybe even finding through the blog a better idea of what community means to me and where I fit into the bigger picture.

Astrological Happenings, Astrology Horoscope - Pluto in Capricorn!

The winds blow a change of direction in September 2009, and we start with powerful waves washing upon the shore with a Full Moon in starry-eyed Pisces on September 4. Pisces is gentle, sensitive, and romantic, and our emotional approach to the day is also soft, kind, and reflective. It's a lovely day to spend time with ourselves, touching upon that 'dreamy' Pisces vibration to do psychic energy work, creative visualization, and dive into healing affirmations through meditation. When involved with romantic interests or professional co-workers, the day can make us feel as if all is well, that it is safe to let our guard down, and give our trust completely. While Pisces is idealistic, this Full Moon can excite our souls when we're searching for love, and in business when we are relying on our imagination to spark terrific ideas. If you're looking for a romantic commitment or verbal agreement in business, because it all feels right - be aware that Pisces is also the big dreamer, and can promise each of us the moon. The mood may feel right while the air is misty, filled with kind words, but once the dream-effect and sky clears - you can end up empty-handed with empty promises. It's a fun day to sketch, to put our emotions into words, to get in touch with our inner child and play with our kids, while blowing pretty bubbles up to the sky!

On September 7, Labor Day, Mercury stations and pauses, before he enters on his three week retrograde journey. Mercury rules communication and trips, so during this time, one can expect that forms of travel and contact with others will be a bit hay-wired and discombobulated. Some of us are lucky enough to see the retrograde at its best - as computers and tech-gadgets, to fax machines, wash machines, and other machinery - run through the backward cycle that the retrograde puts us at - with technical difficulties and crashes, vehicle failures, appliance breakdowns, and missing emails and/or voicemail's. Our thinking process and verbal skills also experience this sort of breakdown, creating miscommunications. We should be 'thankful' to go under this 'Mercurial spell' as we get to see first hand, where our communication areas are broken - causing us grief or misunderstandings. With Mercury traveling 'reverse' in Libra, we can expect misinterpretations in our professional partnerships and romantic relationships. Pay closer attention what is being said now, and you may catch a glimpse at where problems have already existed, but were ignored or overlooked. It's a good time to re-pair, re-build, and re-connect during the re-trograde. You can also prepare yourself to bump into individuals from your past as the 'backward journey' takes us back to our past to make amends, or find closure. During this time - it is suggested that you do not to purchase new appliances, start business, or sign contacts now. Hold off and go over ALL details first.

A new era is upon us now as Pluto stations, and prepares to turn direct on September 10. Pluto is the transformer, and removes 'the unnecessary' and 'the toxic' from our lives, to help us to grow and become the person we need to be, and so we can be our best. It is ruthless, life-changing, spiritually-awakening, intense, and powerful. As Pluto transits through Capricorn, He visits banks, institutions, professional businesses, and government offices to help 'right' what was wrong. Although we're coming out of a retrograde now, he made a re-turn to certain areas that we have all watched in the media, to re-lease and re-build what had become tainted, and we all got to see fine examples of what this tiny planet Pluto is made of. (Oh that's right, he isn't a planet, but I'm not going to be the one who tells him LOL!)

What I personally am looking for during this new age of Pluto in Capricorn, is getting rid of the EXCESS that was brought on when he entered BIG and abundant Sagittarius in 1995. During the past decade, we have seen a rise in plastic surgeries, over-sized plastic breasts, bigger booties, injected big lips, an expansion of technical toys and new gadgets, a huge growth in traveling (Sagittarius) communications from portable phones to laptops, to blackberries, cellphones, etc! We have busier schedules, more over-time, with no time for family. The rise in cost of living, where owning a house became the 'unreachable American dream' for the average folk, and the price of car replaces the price of homes. Everything continued to grow and expand under Sagittarius, including the illusion that 'bigger must be better'. Our means for transportation grew bigger with huge suvs and hummers, our homes became bigger in size, and so did our need for surplus for electric, gas, and heating fuel,. Again, we seen Pluto in action years back as he was removing the toxic in our lives, teaching fuel companies, gas guzzlers, and our power companies that there needs to be limitations - which is what we will 'should' be taught with Pluto in Capricorn. Incomes rose to outrageous numbers, and shopping became a big importance, and Christmas presents needed to charged onto credit cards. Education costs more than a vehicle and a home, but jobs are limited or non-existent. We've watched the diet and exercise businesses boom in the past decade like never before, with sports and entertainment taking on bigger importance, with extravagant ticket prices and contracts, but our people have gotten fatter and out of shape - with a constant rise in obesity in adults, and the wake up call that it is our behavior and lack of responsibility when children are suffering, from our examples.

In Capricorn, who is ruled by Saturn (who I like to refer to as the grumpy old grampa), we learn about traditional ways again. We learn how to how to prioritize, how to limit ourselves, and how to waste less. We learn what is necessary and what isn't. We learn that education is more important again, that scientists and teachers are more of a necessity than movie stars and models, and that police and fireman are more of a necessity than playing football and basketball. I should actually rephrase myself and say that we all have a chance to 'learn' how to limit ourselves and waste less. It isn't going to happen over night, and not everyone learns lesson overnight which is why we will see the same problems happening over and over - until we do see. I can probably say that I will catch hell for my opinions, but I am not saying that sports teams or our entertainment isn't important, I am just saying it is not a necessity.

Here in Pennsylvania, I have griped horribly (as my husband can vouch) how Pittsburgh closed down a number of city police and fireman buildings, because there wasn't enough money. They lost their jobs, couldn't find jobs, and moved out the area. They closed down many schools and limited public transportation because there wasn't enough money. Our kids lost out during the 'game', it put working and single moms at an inconvenience, and people had no way to get to their jobs. There is no money in Pittsburgh, so they HAVE to raise property taxes and force folks out of their home, because there is such a need for money.... BUT there seems to be this mysterious overflow of cash for expensive advertising for sports, contracts with incomes that are out of this world, all with fancy high-priced tickets, new stadiums, and casino. This is my gripe and my opinion as I have watched, astrologically compared the stars to my perspective on life around us. So I am looking very forward to Capricorn putting structure and order into our lives. Capricorn takes of, he provides, and he protects. We have a chance of having a greener world, and learning about kindness for our fellow neighbor. We have a chance at taking care of our children and protecting them, rather than just assuming that they can take care of themselves - while everyone else is doing their own thing. We learn to balance our lives now, a 40 hour work week, family dinners, help the kids with their homework, while actually getting eight hours of sleep. Pluto will be in Capricorn for 15 years, and this guy is old-fashioned, and gets us back to basics, where he takes cares of his family, while lending a helping hand to others. Loyalty is respected, and a handshake and 'our word' actually means something again. He respects elders, he's polite and smiles at strangers, he appreciates good intentions and neighborly offerings - and he graciously returns the favor. He's honorable, respectful, reputable, and loyal. We need this level of communication back to make the world a nicer and peaceful place to live in.

Mercury retrogrades from Libra, and enters Virgo on September 17. And in the same explanation about breakdowns, the retrograde will now enter our money and finances, nitpicking areas that we need to focus on and re-pair, and where misunderstandings and errors need to be restructured and fixed. So anything that you can help yourself through now regarding your money, savings, or bills piling up, would be ideal - to avoid any real surprises.

New intentions and a new attitude are welcomed with a New Moon in Virgo on September 18. Emotional desires to be concentrated on for the next 28 days are our needs to get out finances and money in order, our communication skills with others, but also with ourselves, and a focus on improving our health and well-being, from diet changes, starting new exercise programs, and including meditation and relaxing techniques.

Venus, the planet of desires enters perfectionist Virgo on September 20, and this can aid us in our goals with the New moon to take better care of ourselves. We want to better our life, our health, our work, money, and our service to others.

Our personalities become quite a bit more cheerier and Sun enters polite Libra on September 22, and we become friendlier, more helpful to others, with a balanced need to also do things for ourselves.

Last, Mercury stations and turns direct on September 29, and in a few days, we get 'two thumbs up' to make purchases, sign contracts, and communicate what we say or need to do, without so many interruptions!
